The Minutemen were independently organized civilian colonists that were known for being ready at a "minutes" notice.  These well prepared, self trained, highly mobile militia companies allowed the American colonies to rapidly respond to war threats.  The Minutemen were among the first to fight in the American Revolution and accounted for nearly a quarter of the entire colonial militia.
