Spartan Farewell Phrase A

Description

"Come back with your shield, or on it", is said to be the parting cry of Spartan mothers whose sons were off to battle according to Plutarch.  It was dishonorable to return without a shield as it was the mark of a deserter, the shield being dropped in running away.  The fallen were carried back from battle "on it".
